Hurricane Roslyn strengthens to Category 4 and heads for Mexico.

Hurricane Roslyn is expected to bring high winds and heavy rain to west-central Mexico as it passes near the Pacific coast on Saturday, forecasters said.

People in the popular resort city of Puerto Vallarta and other affected areas in the coastal cities of Jalisco, Nayarit and Sinaloa were urged to end their hurricane preparations due to strong winds. The storm is expected to make landfall on Sunday morning.

Roslyn became a Category 4 hurricane early Saturday morning, according to the National Hurricane Center, which means winds were between 130 and 156 miles per hour. As of 8 a.m. ET Saturday, the storm was about 90 miles southwest of Cabo Corrientes in Jalisco and moving north at 10 miles per hour, the agency said.

The storm’s center was forecast to move north along the southwest coast of Mexico, before approaching west-central Mexico on Saturday and expected to make landfall on the coast of the Mexican state of Nayarit on Sunday morning.

Although the storm may weaken Saturday night, Roslyn is expected to be “at or near major hurricane strength by the time it makes landfall on Sunday,” according to the National Hurricane Center.

Las Islas Marias, the archipelago of four islands off Nayarit, and from Playa Perula north of Jalisco to Escunapa in Sinaloa, is under a 36-hour hurricane warning. Conditions apply. The area along the Mexican coast from El Roblito to Escuinapa was also under a hurricane warning. Persons under a tornado warning should take all tornado precautions and be prepared for evacuation orders. Storm force is expected in this area in the afternoon.

A hurricane watch was issued 48 hours ahead of the expected tropical storm from Esquinapa north to Mazatlan in Sinaloa state. The area is likely to experience stormy conditions on Sunday, forecasters said.

A tropical storm warning was in effect from Playa Perula south to Manzanillo on Saturday and tropical storm surges were expected from Escuinapa north to Mazatlan on Sunday.
