Hurricane Roslyn is set to hit Mexico as a major hurricane.

Hurricane Roslyn is expected to bring high winds and heavy rain to west-central Mexico as it passes near the Pacific coast on Saturday, forecasters said.

People in the popular resort city of Puerto Vallarta and other affected areas in the coastal cities of Jalisco, Nayarit and Sinaloa were urged to end their hurricane preparations due to strong winds. The storm is expected to make landfall on Sunday morning.

Roslyn became a Category 4 hurricane early Saturday morning, according to the National Hurricane Center, which means winds were between 130 and 156 miles per hour. As of 2 p.m. ET Saturday, the storm was about 155 miles south-southwest of Cabo Corrientes, Jalisco, the agency said.

The storm’s center was forecast to move north along the southwest coast of Mexico, before approaching west-central Mexico on Saturday and expected to make landfall on the coast of the Mexican state of Nayarit on Sunday morning.

“While some weakening is possible starting tonight, Roslyn is still expected to be a near or major hurricane when it makes landfall on Sunday,” the National Hurricane Center said.

Las Islas Marías, an archipelago of four islands off Nayarit, and the area from Playa Perula in Jalisco north to El Roblito Nayarit were under a hurricane warning, issued 36 hours before the tropical storm’s strongest winds are expected, meaning hurricane conditions are expected. Persons under a tornado warning should take all tornado precautions and be prepared for evacuation orders. Storm force is expected in this area in the afternoon.

A hurricane watch, issued 48 hours ahead of the expected tropical storm, was issued north of El Roblito to Mazatlán in Sinaloa state. The area is likely to experience stormy conditions on Sunday, forecasters said.

A tropical storm warning was in effect from Playa Perula south to Manzanillo on Saturday and tropical storms were expected from El Roblito north to Mazatlan on Sunday.

Jalisco State Governor Enrique Alfaro He said on Twitter. Educational and tourism activities were suspended in coastal towns until the weekend. About 270 people have been evacuated from the city of Lahuerta as a precaution, and shelters have been set up there and in Puerto Vallarta, he said.

Severe coastal flooding is expected near and east of the storm’s landfall.

As of 2:00 PM ET Saturday, Roslyn’s maximum sustained winds reached 130 mph. Forecasters had expected the storm to strengthen Saturday and become a major hurricane — meaning a Category 3 or higher — when it makes landfall. The weakest hurricane damages homes and uproots and uproots trees, while the strongest destroys homes and causes devastating damage that isolates communities.

Forecasters warned that rain could lead to floods and landslides in difficult areas.

Four to eight inches of rain is expected in Jalisco, with a maximum of 10 inches on the northern coast. Four to six inches of rain is expected in the upper coast of Colima, western Nayarit and southeastern Sinaloa, with a maximum of eight inches. One to three inches of rain is expected in Colima and southern Durango along the lower coast of Michoacán.

Roslin is expected to weaken rapidly after making landfall as it moves over the Sierra Madre Occidental Mountains.

The link between hurricanes and climate change is becoming clearer every year. Evidence shows that hurricanes have become stronger worldwide over the past four decades. A warmer planet can expect stronger storms and more intense hurricanes from time to time, although the total number of storms may decrease because factors such as strong wind shear may prevent weak hurricanes from forming.

Storms are becoming wetter because of more water vapor in the warm atmosphere. Scientists in the year Hurricanes such as Hurricane Harvey in 2017 have produced more rain than would otherwise have caused human-caused damage to the climate, he said. Also, rising sea levels are contributing to superstorms, the most destructive tropical cyclones.
